Connection Speed Measurement Tool

Connection speed tests are performed using IPERF, the commonly used IP bandwidth measurement software. The connection download speed shows the data rate from a MVDDS transponder sending data to the client equipment from the main transmission site in 12GHz band. The connection upload speed shows the data rate from the client equipment back to the main transmission site using the uplink 5GHz band. One’s actual Internet speed depends on many factors: congestion on intermediary links; the speed of the ISP backbone; the performance of the customer PC, smart phone, or tablet.  How the device is connected to the home router, i.e., Ethernet cable, Wi-Fi, etc, can also affect apparent Internet download speeds.

MVDDS Transponder

In MVDDS systems we use the same name as a communications satellite’s transponder which is the series of interconnected units that form a communications channel between the receiving and the transmitting antennas. With data compression and multiplexing, several data channels (Internet, IPTV) may travel through a single transponder on a single wideband carrier.

An MVDDS Sytem can be easily upgraded by adding transponders as the system grows, as needed for more data traffic or more services.

MVDDS Definition

MVDDS (Multichannel Video and Data Distribution Service) is a type of television and Internet delivery technology licensed for use in the United States by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
This terrestrial based wireless transmission method reuses Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) frequencies for distribution of multichannel video and data over large distances.
The spectrum is in Ku-band range, offering fast downloads but requiring other frequencies for uploads.

Multichannel Video Distribution and Data Service

“Multichannel Video Distribution and Data Service (MVDDS) provides consumers with TV programming and Internet connectivity from terrestrial transmitters, under exacting technical arrangements that permit it to share the spectrum with satellites (Direct Broadcast Satellites Service).”

“MVDDS licensees may use spectrum in the 12.2 – 12.7 GHz band for any digital fixed non-broadcast service including one-way direct-to-home/office wireless service…”

There is larger spectrum in the 10.7 — 12.7 GHz band available internationally. The actual frequency range vary by country.
